Acoustic engineer and inventor Amar G. Bose has died at the age of 83.  Bose is the billionaire entrepreneur, whose namesake company, the Bose Corporation, has earned a reputation for bringing high quality audio into the home, auditoriums and automobiles.

The Bose Corporation is a privately-held company.  By refusing to offer stock to the public, Dr. Bose was able to pursue risky long-term research which resulted in noise-canceling headphones and an innovative suspension system for automobiles.

In 2004, Amar G. Bose is quoted as saying, “I would have been fired a hundred times at a company run by M.B.A.’s. But I never went into business to make money. I went into business so that I could do interesting things that hadn’t been done before.”

Bose died on Friday at his home in Wayland, MA.
