A statement released by Thorgerson’s family on Thursday says he was surrounded by friends and family at the time.
“He had been ill for some time with cancer though he had made a remarkable recovery from his stroke in 2003,” it read.
“He is survived by his mother Vanji, his son Bill, his wife Barbie Atonis and her two children Adam and Georgia.”
Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour also released a statement in which he said the artwork Thorgerson created for the band were an “inseperable part of our work.”
Storm Thorgerson began his career in the UK with design group Hipgnosis, founded in the late 1960s, and quickly became one of the industry’s most recognized artists. His credits include albums by Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel, Black Sabbath, Dream Theater, Genesis, Styx, and Muse, among others.
