Tom Waits: “I don’t know what the big time is”

“I don’t know what the big time is,” claims Tom Waits in the latest episode of Blank on Blank, “Tom Waits on Everything and Nothing.”

The digital series, created by PBS, features audio segments of interviews from the archives accompanied by newly created animation. This episode in particular is a 1988 interview with Tom Waits in which he delves into the tunneling habits and social behaviors of moles, his first show business shirt, and what he thinks it means to reach the “big time.”

“It’s probably some terrible place that you can’t get out of. Or that you fall from and break all your bones. Or try to go further and burn up,” ponders Waits.

Tom Waits is listed by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. While he achieved significant commercial success as a solo artist and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, some of his best known songs were made famous by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, the Eagles and Rod Stewart.
