Krist Novoselic on Kurt Cobain: “He never had idle hands”

In a new clip from the upcoming Kurt Cobain documentary, Montage of Heck, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic describes meeting a young, artistic Kurt Cobain.

“I think I was 18 or 19 yeares old and Kurt was like 17,” Novoselic recalls. “But he liked punk rock music and so that piqued my interest. Then I noticed what a good artist he was. He was working at the time as a janitor but he’d always have to do some kind of art, usually defacing something. He never had idle hands. It just came out of him. He had to express himself.”

Also in the clip is video footage that shows Nirvana playing a show for two people in a living room.

“If we played together in the house for a couple of hours and if two people stopped by we considered that a gig. You know, a show,” remembers Novoselic in the clip.

Watch it below.

Montage of Heck is executive produced by Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean. It debuts May 4 on HBO.
