Neil Young and Crazy Horse have been announced as one of the headliners for Global Festival 2012 -a concert to raise awareness and funds to help eradicate global poverty. Taking place on Sept. 29th on the Great Lawn of New York’s Central Park, the show will also feature performances by Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, Band of Horses and K’naan.
Though it is a free concert, fans must earn their tickets through the Global Festival website. Potential concertgoers can earn points to enter the ticket lottery by learning, sharing and taking action against extreme poverty around the world. “The standard model for this kind of event is you sell a ticket through Ticketmaster for $60 or $70 and a portion of that goes to charity,” says Hugh Evans, co-founder of the Global Poverty Project. “We wanted Global Festival to be about action, not money. By thinking different about how we distribute tickets, we’re building a movement.”
The concert is also timed for maximum impact – it will coincide with a United Nations General Assembly Meeting between international leaders to discuss plans to reduce international poverty by 2015.
“With at least 1.3 billion people living in extreme poverty on Earth today, there has never been a better time to become a Global Citizen and do whatever you can to make a difference for your fellow man,” says Neil Young.
