The French government will recognize Paul McCartney with the Legion of Honor medal this Saturday. The Legion of Honor, which was first created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte as a way to recognize merit among both civilians and soldiers, is the highest honor that can be given by the French. The award has five different degrees with McCartney being named as an Officer – the second degree. This honor carries social status but no monetary value, in fact the former Beatle will actually have to purchase his own medal from a licensed jeweller with prices ranging from approximately $213 to $880. Previous Legion of Honor winners include Ravi Shankar, Barbara Streisand, Miles Davis and Clint Eastwood.
