Led Zeppelin’s pivotal album Houses of the Holy was released 40 years ago today.

Although it was the band’s fifth studio album, it was the first that was composed of entirely original material, and it marks a turning point for the band.

During the sessions, Zeppelin recorded a song named “Houses of the Holy,” and although they planned to make it the album’s title track, it didn’t make the cut.  It was later released on their next album Physical Graffiti.

Houses of the Holy was certified 11x Platinum by the RIAA. In 2012 it was ranked number 148 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
