Written and released by J.J. Cale in 1966, “After Midnight” became a hit when Clapton recorded and released his cover of the song in 1970.
“I was dirt poor, not making enough to eat and I wasn’t a young man. I was in my thirties, so I was very happy. It was nice to make some money,” Cale told Mojo magazine of hearing Clapton’s version on the radio for the first time.
