Andy Johns, legendary producer and sound engineer, has died at the age of 61.
Johns got his start working with Eddie Kramer on several recordings for Jimi Hendrix, and went on to engineer and produce records for Van Halen, Eric Clapton, and Joni Mitchell, among others. He worked on Led Zeppelin’s IV and The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street, and his signature sound can be heard on Free’s album Highway, which he both engineered and produced.
Johns is survived by his son, Will Johns, a blues singer and guitarist, and his son Evan Johns, the former drummer for the rock band Hurt.
