Elton John Receives Brits Icon Award

Elton John was honored Monday night with the inaugural Brits Icon prize, which will recognize artists who have had a lasting impact on British culture.

The two hour show which accompanied the presentation marked John’s return to the stage following emergency appendix surgery in July.

Sir Elton performed hits including “Tiny Dancer” and “Rocket Man,” as well as the new single from his forthcoming album, The Diving Board. Rod Stewart joined him for a duet version of “Sad Songs (Say So Much),” while James Blunt, Gary Barlow and Lulu also appeared during the show. Video messages from Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono, Mumford & Sons and others were also shown.

John dedicated the award to his fans, as well as the Women’s Institute and long-time songwriting partner Bernie Taupin.

The Diving Board is due out September 24th.
