John Lennon’s Killer Denied Parole

At his hearing before the parole board on Wednesday, John Lennon’s killer, was denied release from prison for the 7th time.

Mark David Chapman, now 57, was sentenced to 20 years to life in 1981, after shooting John Lennon outside the former Beatle’s New York City apartment in December 1980. Chapman plead guilty to second-degree murder. In a 1992 interview with Barbara Walters, he explained,  “”I thought that by killing him I would acquire his fame.”

After Wednesday’s hearing, a parole member wrote, “Despite your positive efforts while incarcerated, your release at this time would greatly undermine respect for the law and tend to trivialize the tragic loss of life which you caused as a result of this heinous, unprovoked, violent, cold and calculated crime.”

While the board praised Chapman’s conduct and accomplishments during his incarceration, they also stated that “parole shall not be granted for good conduct and program completions alone.”

Chapman will be able to try for parole again in 2014.
