An exciting new documentary about musical maverick and guitar virtuoso Jeff Beck has just been announced. Still On The Run: The Jeff Beck Story delves deep into the past of the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, looking at the circumstances and inspirations that set him on the path to becoming one of the most respected and influential guitarists of all time.
The film, which be available on DVD and Blu-ray, is due out on May 18th via Eagle Rock Entertainment. Covering Beck’s career from the Jeff Beck Group’s seminal 1968 album – Truth (feat. Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood) – through to his Guitar Shop album (1989), the film features in-depth interviews with the legendary guitarist, as well as interviews with the likes of Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, David Gilmour, Ronnie Wood, Slash, Jan Hammer, Joe Perry, Beth Hart and longtime friend Jimmy Page, among others.
Beck and Page became friends as teenagers, spending countless hours listening to records, playing music and later of course, going on to play in the Yardbirds together.
In one of the interviews with Beck, he reflects on what first inspired him to start playing – “I didn’t have to think about taking up guitar, I just wanted to pour my feelings into it.”
When interviewed about his longtime friend, Page says, “He developed a style that’s unique and that’s pretty magical.”
Others praise his unique, experimental sound as well. Musician, composer and producer Jan Hammer explains, “Jeff takes the guitar to the furthest reaches of the guitar universe.”
“He brings it to a different level,” adds Ronnie Wood.
Meanwhile guitarist Jennifer Batten says, “There’s a difference between playing music and being music. Jeff IS music.”
“Still on The Run: The Jeff Beck Story reveals the true story of the guitar player who builds hot rods and captures the excitement and anecdotes of those who have worked alongside him,” explains the press release announcing the project. “Jeff Beck has always been a risk taker, on an endless quest for fresh and challenging new sounds. Bending notes and filtering a myriad of musical inspirations, he will continue to inspire fans and musicians alike by giving voice to his guitar in the most unexpected ways.”
In other Jeff Beck news – his acclaimed Live At The Hollywood Bowl concert, released last year on multiple video and audio formats, is now available as a standalone 2-CD set and will be available as a 2-LP set on May 25th.
Additionally, Beck will be hitting the road this summer with Paul Rodgers and Ann Wilson of Heart. The tour kicks off on July 18th and will wrap on August 26th.
