Recent activity from Steve Perry has fans and media outlets speculating that the former Journey singer is preparing for a return to music. The strongest indication comes today as a press release on behalf of Journey founding member Neal Schon says Perry is set to release a solo album this October.
While no official announcement has been made, the Schon press release mention is the latest in a string of hints that Perry is up to something.
On July 18th, Toad the Wet Sprocket posted a video of Steve Perry joining in the band’s rehearsal, with the caption “What do you say when Steve Perry crashes your tour rehearsal and wants to sing??? YES!”
On July 20th, a Facebook page titled Steve Perry (Journey) revealed photos of Perry doing a t.v. shoot with the caption “Interview with Steve will be on CBS Sunday Morning Oct. 7. Steve went to Hanford for the interview with Hart Images Media Services.”
Mention of a solo album from Steve Perry in a press release on behalf of Neal Schon is far from an official announcement and the information has not been confirmed with Perry’s representatives. However combined with fact that Perry is hanging out in rehearsal spaces and filming a t.v. interview, it’s pretty strong evidence that Perry has something in the works.
Perry was said to be releasing a solo album in 2017 but the project never actually surfaced.
Perry stood with the members of Journey in April of last year as the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It was the first time he appeared in person with his former band mates since 1995. In May, he made an appearance on American Idol, giving one contestant the surprise of a lifetime when he emerged from the audience after her performance of “Don’t Stop Believin'”.
Journey is currently on a co-headlining North American tour with Def Leppard. Co-founding member Neal Schon, who recently said he would like to work with Perry again, has been dedicating the band’s performance of “Lights” to Perry each night. Schon and Perry co-wrote the tune and it was released in 1978 on the band’s album Inifinity – Perry’s first album with the group.
Steve Perry was the lead singer of Journey from 1977 to 1987 and again from 1995 to 1998. He has released two solo albums; 1984’s Street Talk and 1994’s For the Love of Strange Medicine.
