Things are finally rolling in the Stones camp! Though the band’s 50th Anniversary celebrations seem to have gotten off to a slow start, it appears that the legendary rockers are actually recording again. Last Thursday Mick Jagger tweeted a photo of himself sitting on a drum stool, holding a telecaster and surrounded by guitars, amps and harmonicas. “Had fun in the Paris studio this week!” he wrote. The entire band was also photographed leaving a Paris recording studio two days prior.
This is at least the third time that the Rolling Stones have gathered as a band in recent months; convening in London in July at the 50th Anniversary photo exhibit and rehearsing together back in April in the New York Area – part of which was filmed by director Brett Morgen for an HBO documentary airing this fall. “We played everything, really,” said Keith Richards of the jam session. “We’re just getting our chops together. It was like playing in the garage, a maintenance check, you know?”
Before the band met in London, Richards told Rolling Stone Magazine that he hoped the Stones would take the opportunity to discuss recording. “I’d love to get some tracks down and see what songs we’ve got. And that goes along with part of getting the band back together and getting this moving. So I’d love to cut some tracks, yeah.” When asked if he would ever write one-on-one with Jagger again, the guitarist replied, “I have no doubt.”
The Rolling Stones have also posted a “teaser” on their website…hinting that a big announcement is coming. Fans can “get involved” by downloading a free uView app onto their mobile device and then pointing it at the image on the Stones website. (FYI – when you do this, the eyes in the picture come to life as the song “Start Me Up” begins to play.) The website promises that more teasers will be added over the coming week.
In other Stones news, their tour film The Rolling Stones: Charlie Is My Darling – Ireland 1965 will make its premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 29th with an encore showing on October 3rd – both screening will take place at NYC’s Walter Reade Theater. The documentary follows the band as they tour Ireland shortly after “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” hits the top of the charts. It also includes footage of their first professionally-filmed live shows. A box set of the film will be released on November 6th.
