Richie Havens, Woodstock Performer, Dies at 72

376168_10151472667034064_1902021228_nFolk singer Richie Havens has died at the age of 72, passing away Monday from a sudden heart attack, according to a statement from his publicist.

Havens’ career spanned 40 years, after getting his start in the New York City folk scene. His opening performance at Woodstock, which lasted three hours, was one of the highlights of the festival in 1969. His distinctive guitar style became known worldwide after he appeared in the subsequent Woodstock movie, and in 1971, he scored at Top 20 hit with a cover of The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun.”

In a statement, Havens’ rep said, “While his family greatly appreciates that Richie’s many fans are also mourning this loss, they do ask for privacy during this difficult time. A public memorial will be planned for a later date.”
