May 18, 1980 – Peter Criss leaves Kiss for the first of three times.  He is replaced by drummer Eric Carr.

May 18, 2004 –  New Jersey’s Country Cow Creamery gets permission from Ozzy and his wife Sharon to create flavors in their name.  Ozzy’s is called Carnivorous Carrot Cake – cinnamon spice ice cream with carrot cake dipped in hazelnut liqueur, and Sharon’s is Death By Sharon – dark chocolate ice cream with dark chocolate fudge and bits of brownie dunked in Godiva chocolate liqueur.

May 18, 1996 – Soundgarden take the Saturday Night Live stage along host Jim Carrey for their first and only time. They play two tracks off their 5th studio album, Down on the Upside – “Pretty Noose” and “Burden In My Hand.”

May 18, 1980 – Ian Curtis, singer of Joy Division, dies by suicide by hanging.  He was 23. Suffering from epilepsy, which caused him to experience many seizures during live shows, and depression, Curtis left a note saying, “At this very moment, I wish I were dead. I just can’t cope anymore.”

May 18, 2017 Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden, is found dead in his Detroit hotel room, after apparently hanging himself. He was 52. Cornell was a revered singer, songwriter and guitarist who was arguably one of the most influential musicians from the Seattle grunge scene. He also led the groups Audioslave and Temple of the Dog, and appeared on numerous releases with many of his friends including Heart, Slash, Alice Cooper, Andrew Wood and many others. Soundgarden achieved its biggest success with the 1994 album “Superunknown,” which debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart. The album featured the Grammy Award-winning singles “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman.”
