Elvis Costello has teamed up with hip-hop/neo soul band The Roots to record and release a new album due out this fall. The collaboration came about after the two shared the stage on NBC’s “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” where The Roots are the house band, and after working together at a Prince tribute concert earlier this year.
Knowing that the match-up was unconventional, Costello and The Roots say they began recording without approval from their record label.
“Sometimes if you… get the record company involved, then people have ambition rather than starting to play, so we started to play,” Costello said in a recent interview.
Wise Up Ghost, which was produced by long-time Roots collaborator Steven Mandel along with Questlove and Costello, features new songs as well as songs from Costello’s catalog. The album will be released September 17th.
