In remembrance and tribute to founding member and singer/lyricist Ronnie Van Zant and the other band members that lost their lives in the plane crash, there will be a moment of silence on all radio airwaves and throughout the world this Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 7:45pm EST (the 35th anniversary of the tragic crash), followed by the airing of “Freebird”.
Lynyrd Skynyrd had a meteroic rise from relative obscurity to international fame in a period of only four years before a tragic plane crash took the lives of singer/songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, singer Cassie Gaines, and asst. road mgr Dean Kilpatrick.
Ron Eckerman was with them two of those years, and both witnessed and assisted in their climb to the top of the music industry. Now, after 35 years of silence, Eckerman recounts his experiences with the band and the horror of the plane crash in his new book, Turn It Up!
