Scott Weiland, Former Frontman of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, Dies at 48

Scott Weiland, former frontman of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, died Thursday. He was 48.

“Scott Weiland, best known as the lead singer for Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, with his band The Wildabouts,” reads a statement on Weiland’s Facebook page. “At this time we ask that the privacy of Scott’s family be respected.”

TMZ reports that Weiland was found unresponsive on his tour bus around 9 p.m. on Thursday. The Los Angeles Times verified the news of Weiland’s death with the singer’s wife, Jamie.

Weiland was born Scott Richard Kline on October 27, 1967 in San Jose, California. His surname changed at the age of 5 when he was adopted by his step father. In 1986, he met bassist Robert DeLeo and together they formed Stone Temple Pilots. Weiland was the frontman for the band through 2002.

In 2003, he was recruited by former Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum to join Velvet Revolver. After leaving Velvet Revolver in 2008, Weiland returned to Stone Temple Pilots for a reunion tour. He also released four solo studio albums throughout his career, including Blaster, with his band, the Wildabouts, in March of 2015.

Although Scott Weiland famously battled drug addiction throughout his career, the cause of death is currently unknown.
