A ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ Sequel is Officially Happening

A This Is Spinal Tap sequel is in the works and expected to be released in early 2024, Castle Rock Entertainment has announced. Spinal Tap II will arrive 40 years after the original.

The continuation of the 1984 cult classic will see the film’s fictional band members reunite for one last gig in order to fulfil a contractual obligation.

“The idea was that Ian Faith, who was their manager, he passed away. In reality, Tony Hendra passed away. Ian’s widow inherited a contract that said Spinal Tap owed them one more concert,” director Rob Reiner explained to Deadline. “She was basically going to sue them if they didn’t. All these years and a lot of bad blood we’ll get into and they’re thrown back together and forced to deal with each other and play this concert.”

Cast members Michael McKean (David St. Hubbins), Harry Shearer (Derek Smalls) and Christopher Guest (Nigel Tufnel) will reprise their roles, and Rob Reiner – in addition to directing the film – will return to his role as filmmaker Marty DiBergi.

Spinal Tap II is scheduled to be released March, 19 2024.
