Billy Joel received an honorary doctor of music degree from Stony Brook University on Long Island on Friday.

He also gave a speech at the ceremony, telling the graduating students that “if you’re not doing what you love, you’re just wasting your time.

Joel called himself “one of the lucky ones” because he discovered that he wanted to be a musician at a very young age.  He also wished the graduates the commitment to take what they love and make it their life’s work. Watch the video below.

This is not the first honorary degree The Piano Man has received. He also has diplomas from Syracuse University, Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, Fairfield University and Hofstra University.

Joel was born in the Bronx, but grew up in Hicksville, less than an hour from Stony Brook University. He and his girlfriend, Alexis Roderick, are expecting a baby together this summer.
