Larry Coryell, guitarist known as the ‘Godfather of Fusion,” died Sunday in his New York City hotel room. He was 73.
Coryell was born April 2, 1943 in Galveston, TX but grew up in the Seattle area. In 1965, he moved to New York to study classical guitar and went on to play with the likes of Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix, among others, throughout his career. In the 60s, Coryell founded the psychedelic band The Free Spirits in the 70s he performed with fusion band The Eleventh House.
Coryell is survived by his wife, Tracey, four children and six grandchildren.
