Keith Emerson, keyboardist and founding member of Emerson, Lake and Palmer, has died at the age of 71.
A post on the band’s official Facebook page announced confirmed the news.
“We regret to announce that Keith Emerson died last night at his home in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, aged 71. We ask that the family’s privacy and grief be respected,” reads the post.
The cause of death has not been revealed.
Keith Emerson was born November 2, 1944 in Yorkshire, England. Before founding super group Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Emerson was a member of a number of bands including The Nice in the late 60s. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest keyboard players in the prog-rock genre.
Band mate Carl Palmer paid tribute to Emerson Friday, writing, “Keith was a gentle soul whose love for music and passion for his performance as a keyboard player will remain unmatched for many years to come.”
