Kris Kristofferson has recorded a haunting version of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “I Won’t Back Down” featuring strings, a country feel, and a voice that reminds us why he’s an American legend.

The cover was recorded for Texas Rising, a History Channel mini-series about Texas’ struggle for independence. Kristofferson also appears on screen in the series, playing President Andrew Jackson.

The series premieres Monday, May 25th at 9/8c.
