Lesley Gore, best known for her 1963 chart-topping hit “It’s My Party,” died Monday at the age of 68.
Quincy Jones discovered Gore as a teenager and made her an overnight success. After topping the charts with “It’s My Party” at the age of 16, she had follow up hits with “Judy’s Turn to Cry,” “You Don’t Own Me,” “She’s A Fool,” and “Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows”.
“She was a wonderful human being – caring, giving, a great feminist, great woman, great human being, great humanitarian,” Lois Sasson, Gore’s partner of 33 years, told The Associated Press.
Gore died of lung cancer at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. She was a non-smoker.
