Chuck Berry, musical innovator and one of the pioneers of rock and roll, has died at the age of 90.

The news was confirmed Saturday by the St. Charles County Police Department, who were called to reports of an unresponsive man at 12:40 pm local time. Berry was pronounced dead at 1:26 pm on Saturday.

“The St. Charles County Police Department sadly confirms the death of Charles Edward Anderson Berry Sr., better known as legendary musician Chuck Berry,” said the department in a Facebook post. “The family requests privacy during this time of bereavement.”

A cause of death has not been revealed.

Chuck Berry was born “Charles Edward Anderson Berry” on October 18, 1926 in St. Louis, MO. In 1955 he signed with Chess Records and subsequently recorded and released his first hit “Maybellene”. The record sold over a million copies and reached #1 on the Billboard R&B chart. Throughout the following decades, Chuck Berry went on to record and release some of the greatest rock and roll songs of all time including “Johnny B. Goode,” “Roll Over Beethoven” and “Rock and Roll Music”.

A musical innovator and pioneer, Chuck Berry has been cited as an influence on many of the great artists that came after him including the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

John Lennon was quoted as saying “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry’.”
