Tom Petty died Monday evening at the age of 66. A statement released by Petty’s manager Tony Dimitriades on behalf of the family confirmed the news.

“On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty.”

A report Monday afternoon from CBS that Petty had passed, citing the Los Angeles Police Department, turned out to be incorrect. According to Dimitriades’ statement, Petty died “peacefully at 8:40pm PST surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.”

The rocker, who gained fame in the 1970s as the lead singer of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, was found unconscious and in full cardiac arrest Sunday night. He was taken to UCLA Santa Monica hospital but could not be revived.

According to TMZ, who first reported the story, Petty was put on life support upon arrival, but due to a DNR order, life support was pulled.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers recently wrapped up a 40th anniversary tour. Their final show took place at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles last month.

The band is known for several hits including “Free Fallin'”, “American Girl”, and “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” among others.

Petty sold more than 80 million records worldwide over the course of his career with the Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, the Traveling Wilburys and as a solo artist. In 2002 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
