Bob Dylan has released the video for “Wanted Man (Take 1)” from his forthcoming release Bob Dylan (featuring Johnny Cash) – Travelin’ Thru, 1967-1969: The Bootleg Series Vol. 15. The new video offers a unique glimpse into the recording studio and the collaborative process of the two music legends.
This first-take recording is from a 1969 session, shortly after Dylan penned the song for Cash. In fact, the song is so new that they don’t quite have a grasp on the melody. June Carter Cash can be heard at the beginning of the video, offering a helpful reminder: “Be sure that Bob puts the melody to that song, that ‘Wanted Man.’ You forgot the melody.” The two shortly thereafter dissolve into laughter as they remember the melody but lose the lyrics.
A week after this session Cash traveled to San Quentin prison where he recorded his live album At San Quentin. He debuted Dylan’s song there and praised his talent, calling him “the greatest writer of our time.”
In addition to this bootleg recording of “Wanted Man,” Travelin’ Thru, 1967 – 1969: The Bootleg Series Vol. 15 will feature the tracks “Girl From the North Country,” “Mystery Train” (featuring Carl Perkins), and more. It arrives November 1 via Columbia/Legacy.
