Hear Willie Nelson, Jakob Dylan and More Cover Tom Petty’s ‘For Real’

Willie Nelson, his sons Micah and Lukas, Jakob Dylan, Dhani Harrison and Amos Lee have released a new cover of the Tom Petty track “For Real”. You can watch and listen in the player below.

Released as “For Real – For Tom”, proceeds from the song will go to the Midnight Mission in Los Angeles, a homeless shelter Petty supported throughout his career.

“When I first was sent this song asking if I wanted to record it, I was quite frankly dumbfounded,” Lukas Nelson told Rolling Stone. “It was the whole manifesto of our band [Promise of the Real] in a song. It just shows how connected artists who have integrity are with others who share the same passion and fire for being honest with their soul. Fearless and real.”

“For Real” was originally recorded by Petty in 2000 and finally released earlier this year on the posthumous retrospective collection, The Best of Everything.

“[M]ost of what I put together of what I wanted to do in the future I probably learned in those summers watching him and The Heartbreakers play,” Dylan said. “I got to sit next to his amplifiers so I not only got to watch him, I also got to watch the crowd, and to see what the band was doing with their inside conversations. It was a great schooling.”

Accompanying the lyric video for “For Real” is a sort behind-the-scenes documentary about the recording of the track, directed by Peter Harding. Watch it now in the player below.
