Paul Kantner, guitarist and founding member of Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship, has died at the age of 74. Kantner suffered a heart attack earlier this week and passed away on Thursday.
Kantner, born in San Francisco in 1941, formed Jefferson Airplane in 1965 along with Marty Balin. Kantner led the band through a period of great success in the 60s. While Jefferson Airplane was still active, Kantner recorded a side project under the moniker “Paul Kantner and the Jefferson Starship,” and after Jefferson Airplane broke up, Kantner continued to record and perform with Jefferson Starship.
Kantner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
