Bruce Springsteen has sold the rights to his music catalog to Sony Music Entertainment, according to a new report from Billboard this week. The outlet’s sources, who spoke anonymously, say Springsteen may have received in excess of $500 million USD for the deal, likely making it the largest in history for a single artist’s body of work.
The deal reportedly includes his master rights and publishing rights – the recorded works and songwriting – for over 300 songs.
Neither Springsteen nor Sony Music have commented publicly regarding the deal.
With a move towards streaming, large publishing companies have been buying up artist catalogs in hopes of profiting for years to come. Last year, Bob Dylan’s songwriting catalog sold to Universal Music Publishing for more than $300 million. Neil Young sold half of his catalog for $150 million and Stevie Nicks sold hers for $100 million.
Bruce Springsteen has been signed to the Sony Music imprint Columbia Records for his entire career. He has sold more than 150 million albums worldwide including 65 million in the U.S. alone.
