Dickey Betts, founding member and guitarist of the Allman Brothers Band, has been hospitalized following an accident at his Florida home on Monday evening. The news was shared on Betts’ official Facebook account and website.

Betts was in the yard playing with the family’s dog when he slipped and cracked his head, causing bleeding from the brain, according to the statement. He is currently in a local hospital with brain surgery scheduled for Friday. The surgery will relieve the swelling.

David Spero, Betts’ longtime friend and manager, said the beloved rock legend is “listed as in critical but stable condition”.

Betts’ wife Donna said in the statement, “‘The family appreciates all of your thoughts and prayers during this very trying time. Dickey is a notorious fighter and he is displaying that now!”

Last month, the guitarist canceled a string of dates after suffering a mild stroke. A few weeks later, Spero announced that Betts was recovering well and had already started playing guitar again.

The Dickey Betts Band shows scheduled for November have been canceled.
