Green Day marked the 25th anniversary of their seminal album Dookie with a killer performance at the American Music Awards last night – Sunday, November 24, 2019.
The band began with their new single “Father of All…”, then ripped into their punk-pop classic “Basket Case” – proving that the song has lost none of its appeal in the quarter-century since its release. Watch the video in the player below.
Their performance received a heartfelt introduction by 17-year-old Indie-Pop star Billie Eilish, who said of Green Day, “Growing up, there was no band more important to me and my brother.”
“Father of All…” is the title track from Green Day’s forthcoming album by the same name. The LP, which was announced in September, will be the group’s 13th release and the first since 2016’s Revolution Radio.
In an interview with Rolling Stone about the new album, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong discussed his love of soul music and wanting to incorporate that influence into the new album, which ultimately resulted in a Prince-inspired falsetto on the title track.
“I told my engineer, ‘I might look like a fucking idiot, but bear with me,’” Armstrong said of crafting the song, adding “Father of All…” felt like “a unicorn falling out of the sky: I don’t know what this is, I don’t know how I did it, but this is the direction I’m headed.”
Green Day is currently gearing up for the Hella Mega Tour with Weezer and Fall Out Boy, which launches in Singapore in March 2020. The worldwide tour will wrap in August with a show at Citizen’s Bank Park in Philadelphia. Visit GreenDay.com for more details.
