Paul Rappaport

Paul Rappaport was Senior VP at Columbia Records where he enjoyed a 33 year career in radio promotion and marketing. He is recognized as being instrumental in the careers of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Santana, Journey, Elvis Costello, Judas Priest, Alice in Chains, and many more. He is also noted as the Co-Creator and Executive Producer of the Emmy Award winning series, A&E’s Live by Request, producing 40 live prime-time television music specials featuring a diverse array of artists from Tony Bennett to David Bowie. An active musician himself since he was fourteen, this adventure also brought great musical opportunities, including an inspirational guitar lesson from Keith Richards and a live onstage appearance with Pink Floyd at the London Arena. Paul joined Judy in 2009 to help build Classics Du Jour into what is now the music industry’s premiere promotion and marketing company for classic rock. At that time he started writing “Backstage Access” for CDJ, which has become a popular music blog filled with insights and inside stories about the many artists he has worked with over the years. Although Paul has stepped away from daily operations to pursue his own interests, he loves CDJ and continues to write “Backstage Access.” His recently formed blues band, Blues Next, is rapidly gaining steam on Long Island, NY where he lives. He is also writing a book about the wild, early days of the rock music business.

Mott, Hunter, Me and the Cops!

Mott the Hoople in 1974

I LOVED Mott the Hoople. Glam Rock with real groove and slash guitar (especially when Mick Ralphs was in the band). Also got a kick from the adorable groupies that followed them all across the country. I had to let them in through backstage each night as I didn’t have the heart to turn them … Continue reading Mott, Hunter, Me and the Cops!

First, let me say that I am very glad that there is a Rock And Roll Hall OF Fame. Rock and roll is a uniquely American art form and all of rock’s artists, bands, and notable side men should be remembered for this music, which appears to be standing the test of time. But there … Continue reading The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame – Part 2

The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame dinner/ceremony is always a treat because, well, it’s rock and roll! Yes, everyone dresses up in a tux, but no one is really fooling anyone—most of us don’t belong in a tux. It’s almost funny to see, because the real rockers there always look like they’re in some … Continue reading The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

Owsley Passes

This is sad. I met him once in my friend Jeff Jone’s office at Sony. Jeff called me down as he knew it would mean a lot for me to meet the legend. The funniest things was, usually you tell an artist that you love their music. Here I was telling Owsley how much I … Continue reading Owsley Passes

How To Become A Rock Star

Rock star stock image

I was watching TV in the gym while riding a bike and VH1 came on with show about Adam Lambert. Adam was talking about all the changes in his life and how, at one point, he really decided that he wanted to be a rock star. Then he said something that I found fascinating. He … Continue reading How To Become A Rock Star

The Way It’s Supposed To Be

“You look like a bunch of stoners!!”  That was Judy’s first take.  Can’t say that wasn’t the case (ha, ha), but the importance of this picture is…we were also key record executives of that period!—circa 1975. We weren’t that far away from the artists themselves.  We were all kind of cut from the same cloth, … Continue reading The Way It’s Supposed To Be
