Billboard has published their annual year-end charts and Metallica tops the Rock Albums list for 2017 with their most recent release Hardwired … to Self-Destruct. The album, which came out in November of 2016, was certified platinum earlier this year.
The Billboard year-end chart is based on sales between December 3, 2016 and November 25, 2017. Rounding out the top 10 are the Rolling Stones at #9 with their Blue and Lonesome album, a project of blues covers, and Tom Petty at #10 with his Greatest Hits album, released in 1993.

The #4 spot goes to the classic-rock themed Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 soundtrack which features the likes of ELO, Fleetwood Mac, George Harrison and Cheap Trick.
Journey just missed the top 10, coming in at #11 with their Greatest Hits package, while Metallica also took the #16 with their 1991 self-titled album, commonly known as “the black album”.
The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band came in at #18 and Creedence Clearwater Revival Featuring John Fogerty came in at #19 with Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits.
Other rock acts in the Top 10 include Imagine Dragons, twenty one pilots, Panic! At the Disco, Linkin Park and the Lumineers.
