Rolling Stones Perform First Ever Concert in Israel Despite Pressure from Pink Floyd Members to Cancel

The Rolling Stones performed their first ever show in Israel Wednesday evening, despite pressure from Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and Nick Mason to cancel.

Waters and Mason wrote an open letter to the Stones published in Salon last month, urging them to cancel their concert to demonstrate solidarity with the Palestinian people and their struggle against occupation.

But the Rolling Stones arrived in Israel Monday in their tongue & lips-clad jet and the show went on.

During the band’s stay, guitarist Ronnie Wood, drummer Charlie Watts, and touring keyboard player Chuck Leavell visisted Jerusalem’s Western Wall, while Mick Jagger posted a photo of himself on Twitter at the Roman ruins at Caesarea.

On Wednesday, The Stones played to a crowd of 50,000 in Tel Aviv after pushing back their start time by 45 minutes to allow devout Jews time to get to the show after the end of Shavuot, the Jewish holiday during which Orthodox Jews may not drive or handle money.
