Paul Rappaport

Paul Rappaport was Senior VP at Columbia Records where he enjoyed a 33 year career in radio promotion and marketing. He is recognized as being instrumental in the careers of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Santana, Journey, Elvis Costello, Judas Priest, Alice in Chains, and many more. He is also noted as the Co-Creator and Executive Producer of the Emmy Award winning series, A&E’s Live by Request, producing 40 live prime-time television music specials featuring a diverse array of artists from Tony Bennett to David Bowie. An active musician himself since he was fourteen, this adventure also brought great musical opportunities, including an inspirational guitar lesson from Keith Richards and a live onstage appearance with Pink Floyd at the London Arena. Paul joined Judy in 2009 to help build Classics Du Jour into what is now the music industry’s premiere promotion and marketing company for classic rock. At that time he started writing “Backstage Access” for CDJ, which has become a popular music blog filled with insights and inside stories about the many artists he has worked with over the years. Although Paul has stepped away from daily operations to pursue his own interests, he loves CDJ and continues to write “Backstage Access.” His recently formed blues band, Blues Next, is rapidly gaining steam on Long Island, NY where he lives. He is also writing a book about the wild, early days of the rock music business.

The Rolling Stones On Tour Again! – Some Fun Personal Insights & Stories!

The Rolling Stones in a promo image for the Steel Wheels tour

As many would agree, the Rolling Stones are the last group that anyone thought would still be alive, much less touring and still playing great.  Yet, here they are in 2018 re-releasing “Ruby Tuesday” in its original mono version and touring Europe this summer.  All I can say is, God bless them.  They will probably … Continue reading The Rolling Stones On Tour Again! – Some Fun Personal Insights & Stories!

Actors Who Want To Be Rock Stars – Why?

Hollywood Vampires

Over the years I have been amazed at how many top-notch celebrity actors there are who want to be rock stars, as if the acting and celebrity is not enough to totally fulfill them. Is the power of the music from the 60’s, the artists it spawned, and/or the subsequent education about our original great … Continue reading Actors Who Want To Be Rock Stars – Why?

Eric Clapton: Life In 12 Bars – A Great Documentary!

Eric Clapton Life in 12 Bars

God giveth and God taketh away.  Never has that phrase been so apt when talking about the life of Eric Clapton. Many of us loosely know about his life, his music, his triumphs and failures, and mostly about the pain he’s endured through most of it, but this documentary really gets down to the particulars … Continue reading Eric Clapton: Life In 12 Bars – A Great Documentary!

Dixie Dregs Alert!—Go See Them!!

Dixie Dregs

This is simply one of the best bands I have ever seen!  I am embarrassed to say that I am very late to the party on this one as somehow they were not on my radar during their heyday (late seventies into the 80’s).  This is quite surprising to me, an avid guitarist, since Steve … Continue reading Dixie Dregs Alert!—Go See Them!!

Iconic Artists “Retiring” – Doesn’t Sound Right + Funny Paul Simon and Frank Zappa Stories

Paul Simon

I recently read in our good ol’ CDJ about the retirement plans of Paul Simon, Neil Diamond, Elton John, and Ozzy Osbourne.  The strangest feeling came over me—it just didn’t sound right. I actually am finding it hard to cope with the thought.  Although I am getting older myself and in semi-retirement mode for the … Continue reading Iconic Artists “Retiring” – Doesn’t Sound Right + Funny Paul Simon and Frank Zappa Stories

Rush – and a Revelation

Rush: Time Stand Still

People have often asked why the time from the early 60’s through the 90’s was so special for music. I believe I know that answer, but why that time was also so special for the music industry has eluded me until I recently saw a great documentary on the band Rush and their rabid fans.  … Continue reading Rush – and a Revelation

New Song—Fun Video!

Blues Next

Happy New Year everyone! I put together a blues jam session a couple years ago just to try and up my game as a guitar player. That session organically turned into a pretty hot blues band, which is now called Blues Next. I wrote a rockin’ blues song about how the world didn’t turn out … Continue reading New Song—Fun Video!

Having Some Fun at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Expense

Dr. Feelgood All Through The Night

For anyone who ever watched 60 Minutes, think of this as the “A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney” bit at the end of each show.  Kind of fitting as this is my year-end blog. Who the heck are the voters for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame??  Try as they do, they never seem … Continue reading Having Some Fun at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Expense

Rediscovering Chris Hillman

I was reading our own web platform, Classics Du Jour, about the “10 Lesser Known Facts About Joni Mitchell…” and at the end was a “related” story about Chris Hillman. I clicked on that and discovered the new Chris Hillman album produced by Tom Petty! I’ve always felt that CDJ served a very meaningful purpose, … Continue reading Rediscovering Chris Hillman

The Hidden Secret Musicians of Our Legendary Hits

The Wrecking Crew music documentary

I just finished watching Standing In The Shadows Of Motown and it blew my mind!  I’m late to the party on this one as the film came out in 2002, but the story about how all those fabulous hit records were made is priceless, timeless, and it’s a movie that you want to watch over … Continue reading The Hidden Secret Musicians of Our Legendary Hits
